IT WAS the year of two fashions - and they couldn't have been more different.

The cardigan - as favoured by pre-teen fans of cop show Starsky and Hutch - was going head to head with punk. And even today we're still not sure who won.

Named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, the cream and brown Starsky cardigan originated as a military jacket of knitted wool, with centre front buttoning. When mass manufacture became possible with machines in the Forties, the style became casual wear for men and children.
