NEW YORK -- Private label products are not a new development in retailing, according to a new report based on a roundtable discussion at last year's Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA) trade show.
"Private label products go back to the beginning of the 19th century and even earlier than that to colonial America," said a panelist at the show. "They were the first retail brands."
The PLMA report, "From Merchant to Marketer: Exploring the Evolution of Modern Retailing," contends that early retailers--often general stores in those days--put their own names on many of the products they sold, and that practice continued. A&P carried many private label products, ...
