Created in 1938, this unique Federal procurement program employs more than 45,000 Americans who are blind or have other severe disabilities. More than 53 million people in the United States are blind or have a severe disability; this population continues to experience an exceptionally nigh unemployment rate of nearly 70 percent of people with disabilities are not employed. Formed by Congress to help alleviate this employment inequity, the JWOD Program enables people at more than 600 community-based nonprofit agencies who are blind or have other severe disabilities to lead more productive and independent lives by utilizing the purchasing power of the Federal government to ...
