He'd gone no farther than Niagara Falls.
But when John Venditti took his Spanish study overseas - going beyond recitations in his Northern Illinois University textbook - he bypassed courses in Europe, long viewed as a hallmark of study abroad.
The 22-year-old senior instead headed south to Costa Rica, spending 10 weeks studying near the capital city of San Jose.
There, Venditti hoped to learn a Spanish relevant to the suburban students he wants to teach, students likely to hear the language spoken by area immigrants from Mexico and Latin American countries.
