Nobody pays me to hunt," said Oregon dogman Darrell Reeves, "so I can do it at my own pace. And I do enjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon in the mountains."
It wasn't Sunday, but the hunt had certainly begun leisurely. The dogs, mostly walking, though sometimes breaking into a slow trot, were barely leaving Reeves' side. One spaniel loped up a logging road. Fifty feet away, it simply stopped and stared into space the way I remember Henry Fonda doing in some of his old movies. I always wondered whether Fonda was deep in profound thought or just standing there bewildered. The spaniel's face didn't reveal a clue, either.
