QUESTION Was Horatio Nelson's mistress, Emma Hamilton, obese?
WHEN Emma Hamilton was younger and took up with Sir William Hamilton, she was tall, slim and ravishing, as can be seen in the many George Romney paintings and works of other contemporary artists of the 1780s and early 1790s.
However, her size increased greatly over the years until by the time she met Nelson, she was extremely overweight. Several contemporary cartoons and references show how huge she had become.
For example, in 1796, Sir Gilbert Elliott, Viceroy of Corsica and a good friend of Nelson's, wrote to his wife about Emma: 'Her ...
