It's the last hoops game of the season. The score is close, but the star player has the ball. He jumps and scores, but as he lands, he crumples to the floor. Ouch! The MVP just sprained an ankle.
What next? A nice serving of RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. For a strain (stretched of torn ligament) or sprain (stretched or torn muscle), these self-help steps can mean the difference between a speedy recovery and a prolonged stay on the sidelines.
Just remember, if you suffer a sports injury, don't play doctor. Though RICE is good first aid, it's only a quick fix. The experts that RICE is no substitute for a doctor's exam.
Rest
