WHEN Pope John Paul II came to Glasgow almost a quarter of a century ago, he invoked our patron saint, Andrew, to pay a nice compliment to Scotland. As Bishop of Rome the Pope is, of course, the successor to St Peter, and he reminded the huge congregation in Bellahouston Park that it was the eldest brother Andrew who brought Peter to Christ. So there was a special relationship between Scotland and Rome.
He might, of course, have said the same thing on visits to Russia, Greece and Romania - and perhaps did - for Andrew is the patron saint of these countries also.
Indeed, since Andrew never set foot in Scotland, many must ...
