The National Baseball Hall of Fame is peppered with athletes' nicknames, most of which tell the story of a player's feats and strengths. But Iron Man Joe McGinnity's nickname tells two stories: one of his inexhaustible pitching arm and the other of his offseason job in a metalcasting facility.
McGinnity's major league career began in 1899 when he joined the Baltimore Orioles, but he found his greatest success with the New York Giants, where he was a key cog in the 1905 World Series team. McGinnity is most famous for starting both ends of a double-header, and in 1903, he pulled off the feat three times in a single month, winning all six games.
