A new donor heart allocation scheme which is predicted will decrease pretransplant deaths by about 7% in adults, and 6% in pediatrics needing a heart transplant, was adopted by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN)/United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Board of Directors.
Under the newly modified policy, hearts will be offered to candidates in the two highest levels of medical urgency status (Status 1A and Status 1B) up to a distance of 500 miles from the donor hospital before any local candidates of lower urgency (Status 2) would be eligible to receive the offer of an organ.
