Dec. 7--Almost anytime the words "alcohol sales" and "downtown" are mentioned in the same sentence at Salina Planning Commission meetings, ears perk up.

At Tuesday's meeting, those ears belonged to Commissioner Monroe Funk, who balked at approving a request to allow alcohol sales at Santa Fe Phillies and Subs, 145 S. Santa Fe.

Problems associated with downtown bars have been a sensitive issue for the planning commission in recent years. And, that was evident in Funk's reaction to the small sandwich shop's application for a conditional-use permit to sell alcohol.
