Medical equipment maker Keisei Medical Industrial Co Ltd has developed external bone splints made of a magnesium alloy that allows X-rays to pass through them, thus providing doctors with unobstructed X-ray images of broken bones and dislocated joints.
The product weighs just 12 g, half the weight of conventional titanium and stainless steel splints, which greatly reduces the discomfort felt by the wearer, the company claims.
Keisei Medical's Niigata lab had been developing the device since March 2004 in collaboration with Futuro, a Saitama Prefecture-based medical equipment trader.
