Consumers who may not have been following the compact disc (CD) packaging controversy will be surprised when they enter a store like Tower Records to find that all CDs are in jewel-box-sized packaging. Other retailers will replace all their CD long-boxes with the new jewel boxes within 12 to 18 months.
Since April 1, all new music releases on CD have been shipped to stores longbox free as a result of a voluntary ban on that packaging agreed to by record companies last year.
