As I write this review a bunch of credulous celebrity wannabees are apparently in training for a fake space mission for the amusement of reality TV viewers. But laughing at human vanity and gullibility is nothing new.
You could say that Geoffrey Chaucer's medieval masterpiece prefigures Big Brother in using a contrivance - in this case a pilgrimage to Canterbury - to bring together an unlikely cross-section of society. Of course that would not necessarily rate as one of his greatest achievements.
