GPS technology was once heralded for its location-tracking abilities and its viability as an E911 solution. Many U.S. operators, including Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and Alltel, already use GPS as a way to meet the FCC-mandated E911 safety requirements. But today GPS chipsets are being incorporated into handsets worldwide at the request of wireless operators, and the intent isn't just to use GPS technology for 911 safety, but for revenue-generating location-based applications.
