"Grandma just went to Greece," someone shouted as the cimbalom changed tempo and added Zorbaesque ornaments to the emotive melody. It was an informal motel room gathering during the Nassau Community College Folk Festival as Marian Miu, of Les Yeux Noirs, and Klezmatics' fiddler Lisa Gutkin, jammed on Lisa's "Melody for My Grandmother." The minor mode tune was perfect for the improvisational exchange which had included tunes spanning genres, nations, continents and time.
