Seventy-eight year old bluesman R.L. Burnside left this world on September 1, 2005 after a long and successful career. Although he was first recorded in 1967 and began touring nationally and internationally in the late 1970s, he achieved his greatest popular and commercial success in the 1990s. His health began to rapidly decline over the last two years, so he spent increasing amounts of time resting at home, punctuated by occasional hospital visits. Nevertheless, only two months before his death, he traveled to Davenport, Iowa, where he accepted the key to the city and many verbal tributes at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival.
