Preliminary results of two highly anticipated clinical trials examining the benefits of glucosamine and/or chondroitin were revealed at the end of September. After five years and approximately $14 million, the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and led by various clinical investigators, released an abstract of initial findings in this landmark study. A second study, the European-sponsored Glucosamine Unum in Die Efficacy (GUIDE) Trial, also unveiled the results of its trial, which compared glucosamine sulfate to acetaminophen.
