ORLANDO, Fla. _ Nick Martinez sidles up to a sawhorse and throws down a slab of siding.

"Bet that's 23 inches," he said, glancing up at a bare area the siding will cover.

Perched on a ladder, Brandon Clark extends a tape measure and, with a wry grin, announces the verdict.

"Twenty-two and one-half."

Nick smiles, scrawls a mark on the siding and starts cutting with a circular saw.

"You take your GED (test) tomorrow?" Nick, 17, asks as Brandon approaches.
