Dec. 10--NEWPORT NEWS -- Grocery gurus descended Friday on the first Trader Joe's to open in Hampton Roads, swooning over the store's selection of low-priced wines, health foods and self-branded gourmet items.
"It's like shopping bliss," said James Bezek, a Norfolk resident who wasted no time before heading to the Peninsula with his wife and son to fill a cart with pita chips, organic apple sauce and a package of prepared Middle Eastern appetizers.
Their drive to the new Trader Joe's, in the Jefferson Commons shopping plaza on Jefferson Avenue, shortened the usual monthly trip they would take to the Washington, D.C.-area ...
