Fermilab officials informed the lab's neighbors that staff last month detected the presence of a mildly radioactive isotope in a creek that flows from the research center's grounds.
The traces of tritium were far below federal water standards, according to a Dec. 9 letter Fermilab Director Piermaria Oddone sent to nearby residents. Staff from the lab near Batavia were performing routine tests Nov. 2 when they took the first tritium- tinged sample from the water in Indian Creek, which lies on the lab's southwest grounds.
The most recent sample, taken on Dec. 6, showed a decrease in contaminates.
