IN today's climate of robotic on-message politicos and policy advisers - all in the US trend - it is hard to believe that someone as individual and outstanding as Senator Eugene McCarthy ever existed.
Yet aside from merely being a poet and one of the wittiest and intelligent of post-war politicians, Sen McCarthy was anything but a light-weight. He led the Democratic Party's revolt against the Vietnam War which forced Lyndon Johnson to withdraw from the presidential race in 1968.
