WASHINGTON _ After weeks of protest, the White House reversed itself Thursday and agreed to allow Sen. John McCain's anti-torture amendment to become law.
During a brief Oval Office meeting, President Bush said he and McCain, R-Ariz., shared a common objective "to make it clear to the world that this government does not torture."
Bush had threatened to veto any legislation containing a prohibition against torturing prisoners in American custody.
McCain, who was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for 5 { years, had insisted that the United States prohibit "cruel, inhuman and degrading" treatment of prisoners, many ...
