For a few weeks back in 1999, it looked as if the latest film by producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner was going to be a dud. During the first test screening of their romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, the audience sat totally pokerfaced. "We got no laughs whatsoever," remembers Richard Curtis, the screenwriter. "It looked like it was going straight to DVD."
