PALM BEACH has been an integral part of Town & Country ever since the resort's inception, in the 1890s. As Newport was the summer resort of rich Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, so Palm Beach became its winter counterpart, attracting many of the same prominent families. They would pack their trunks, collect their members, assemble their servants (yes, that--not "household help"--was what they were called) and stay for the season.
Back then, the most efficient way to travel was by train, on Henry Morrison Flagler's railroad, which he extended to Palm Beach in 1894. At the final stop stood the Royal Poinciana hotel, also created by Flagler. It ...
