N Rammelsberg they have been mining ore for a 1,000 years, bringing brightly coloured quartz from deep inside the coal black depths of the Hartz Mountains . Today, only tourists and visitors travel underground on the cramped, metal, mine train. The deafening steam hammers and back-breaking labour of yesteryear has been replaced by the echo of tourist's chatter as they walk through centuries of history - their only labour is bending their heads to avoid the low galley roof.
