Dear Carol: My son gave me this cactus-type plant a few years ago. All of a sudden it got this long stemmed blossom that came out of the center. The instructions were to always keep water in the center cup formed by the leaves of the plant. The edge of the leaves have very sharp prickers. Can you help by telling me what it is? - L.D., Auburn.
Dear L.D.: This plant isn't a cactus. It's a bromeliad, the silver vase or silver urn bromeliad, Aechmea fasciata. It comes from Brazil, and is a popular houseplant. The showy pink floral bracts can last for months.
