When Radio 2 listeners were asked in 2002 in a poll to celebrate 150 years of the Patent Office what their favourite invention was, they voted for the bicycle. The two-wheeled pedal steed - after Shanks' Pony, of course - is the cheapest and cleanest form of individual transport that has ever been invented.
It doesn't rely on petrol or hay and it takes up little space. It requires little in the way of attention and is an excellent form of exercise.
