If insomnia is secondary to another sleep disorder it is usually recommended that the primary sleep disorder be treated first. Some examples of sleep disorders that may be primary include: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which may be treated by abstaining from long-acting sedative hypnotics and alcohol, avoiding sleeping in a supine position, applying PAP therapy, and oropharyngeal surgery. Circadian rhythm disorders may be treated with bright light therapy. Those who are shift workers should maximize their exposure to sunlight while awake and minimize exposure during sleep.
