The marketing of oxygenated gasoline began in 39 areas throughout the United States last month--representing an estimated 38% of total national gasoline sales. There was no price increase on the national average, but some local jumps did occur. While there were no reported disruptions, it's not at all clear that the markets will make it through February without some supply problems or significant local price increases.
Oxygenated gasoline must contain 2.7% oxygen by weight (2.0% in California), equivalent to 15% of MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) by volume or 7.4% of fuel ethanol by volume. In either case, oxygenates expand the supply of gasoline significantly and ...
