Everybody accepts that Americans celebrate the independence of the United States on the Fourth of July, in remembrance of that famous date in 1776. As good students of critical understanding in social studies, can we simply accept July 4, 1776, as the day on which the colonies declared their independence, or should we check our primary sources to make certain that this basic historical fact, found in every American history textbook, is accurate?
