President Bush signed into law P.L. 109-80, the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Enhancement Act, on September 30. This law permanently increases the maximum coverage available for Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) from $250,000 to $400,000.
(Earlier this year, Congress enacted temporary legislation that allowed for the same increase. The temporary increase was included in P.L. 109-13, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for the Department of Defense and the Global War on Terror. This law only allowed for the increase until September 30.)
