Insomnia is a prevalent problem in a large segment of the population. The underlying causes of insomnia must be evaluated prior to determining any treatment plan. Some patients experience difficulty falling asleep. There are also instances when falling asleep is not problematic, but once asleep the patient is unable to stay asleep. In many cases, the sleep complaint may be both with falling asleep and staying asleep. Patients with physiological problems such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome or periodic limb movements during sleep should be evaluated and treated prior to starting independent treatment for the insomnia.
