THE Ochil hills above Stirling have formed a familiar backdrop to many great power struggles of Scottish history. William Wallace repelled the English hordes at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, while at Bannockburn in 1314, the very fate of the nation was decided.
In November 1715, the Battle of Sheriffmuir signalled the beginning of the end of the Jacobite uprising.
