WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS, attempts to engage with the social sciences have not been prominent among ecclesiologists. At the methodological level, Joseph Komonchak has consistently argued that the social sciences have a foundational role in the study of the Church. (1) A number of his essays have both urged and illustrated this foundational role. Still it is not a call that has been widely accepted, at least in practice.
