Gov. Jim Doyle pledged Monday to sign legislation repealing Wisconsin's automatic, annual increase in the gas tax to give consumers a break -- but said lawmakers may have to jack up registration fees to ensure enough money for the state's road system.
The Legislature approved a bill this month to end the annual indexing for inflation in 2007. It also would move up by one month -- to April 1 -- a planned penny cut in the part of the tax that helps cover the costs of environmental cleanup projects.
