A HIGH COURT judge today elevated the Melton Mowbray pork pie to the same iconic status as Parma ham.
At issue, in a market worth [pounds sterling]50million a year, was the question: is the pie a distinctive geographical dish or a national recipe?
Pork pies have made the Leicestershire town famous since the first one was baked in 1831.
The Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association successfully lobbied the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to apply for Protected Geographical Indication status from the EC.
