Dec. 22--BANGALORE, India -- Naphtha-fired power plants across India have been lying idle or in partial use for some time now because of the sharp rise in the price of the fuel which has made the power generated by these utilities unaffordable for customers.
Limited availability of natural gas in the domestic market has made it difficult for most of these plants to switch over to the cheaper fuel, leaving them with no option but to almost shut or slow down, sources said. Besides, good monsoons this year has encouraged state transmission utilities to rely more on hydro power generating stations.
