A HIGH Court judge yesterday gave the go-ahead for the Melton Mowbray pork pie to be elevated to the same culinary status as Parma ham and Mortadella Bologna.
Mr Justice Crane refused a bid by Northern Foods to stop an application to the European Commission for production of the pie to be limited to an area surrounding the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray.
If the application is granted, Northern Foods, which manufactures its pies in Shropshire and Wiltshire, will no longer be able to call them Melton Mowbray pork pies.
