PADUCAH, Ky. -- Early fall hunting seasons, fishing and other outdoors recreation have more Kentuckians encountering snakes nowadays, and mistaken identities are routine.
"The first thing that pops into everybody's head when they come upon a snake is always the question of whether it's poisonous," said naturalist Scott Shupe.
Kentucky isn't exactly overrun with venomous snakes, but there certainly are some that pack poison and warrant greater respect, said the longtime herpetology specialist, a Farmington resident in far western Graves County.
