Orphaned at the age of two and working as a valet and a clerk, Daniel Henry Holmes grew up without a formal education.
But he eventually started a department store dynasty in the South, mastered a half dozen languages, built a castle in Covington and was known as the "King of New Orleans."
Holmes, the man for whom Covington's high school is named, was born on a farm near Point Pleasant in Clermont County, Ohio, on April 28, 1816.
His father died in April 1818, and his mother died two months later. Daniel was brought to the Cincinnati area to be raised by an older brother, Sam.
