A collection of mercury glass would be so fine for a formal mantel during the festive December season. A non-collector can make do by nestling silvery Christmas tree glass balls in fresh evergreen boughs. But cheap holiday ornaments with their hangers hidden beneath them are hardly a substitute for a fine and valuable array of silvered glass (also known as mercury glass or Varnish glass) made throughout the second half of the 19th century. The difference is as dramatic as a sad, rayon Santa suit compared to one of rich, red velvet trimmed in ermine.
