THE Melton Mowbray pork pie could be elevated to the same culinary status as Parma ham and Champagne after a landmark ruling in the High Court.
Manufacturers have been told they can apply to the European Commission to ask for the name to be limited to pies produced in the region around the Leicestershire town.
The Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association says the town's name and reputation is being used by other manufacturers to sell pies lacking the correct ingredients and colour.
It wants its pies, originally developed at a small baker's shop in the town in 1831, to be given the same protected regional status as ...
