Several years ago, we visited the village of Santubong in Sarawak on the western coast of Malaysian Borneo. We were looking for the site of a beachside bungalow that, during the mid-19th century, belonged to the first governor of Sarawak, an Englishman by the name of James Brooke. We asked around the village, but nobody had any idea where it might have been found.
However, we figured that Brooke would have had it built with a fine view and open to sea breezes and that subsequent British governors would have built their official resthouses on the same spot.
