Of all photography's myriad guises and applications, the practice of taking pictures of the Earth from the air has had the greatest value to the world's geographers. Photography was still in its infancy when French artist Felix Tournachon (better known as Nadar), made the first aerial photograph in 1858, from a tethered balloon around 80 metres above the village of Petit-Becetre in the Bievre Valley.
