Students of classical antiquity have long been influenced by Plutarch's account (in his writing on Pericles) describing the construction of the monuments and artwork on the Acropolis. According to Plutarch, around 445 BC Pericles decided to rebuild the monuments that the Persians had destroyed. The work was done quickly, largely under the direction of Pericles and Phidias.
