Dec. 23--Stephens College wants to rezone its property around College Avenue and Broadway to speed the refurbishment of two deteriorating dormitories and to match the grounds' use to its zoning.
The college filed an application with the Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission yesterday afternoon to change the classification of four parcels at the intersection from residential to commercial. College officials plan to seek zoning changes for more of its property later this winter.
"It seems to us this is a natural extension of the downtown business district," college President Wendy Libby said in an interview.
