The first cleaning of the Mount Rushmore (South Dakota) memorial got under way on the 4th of July and was completed by the end of the month. The pressure washing was done by German cleaning equipment manufacturer Alfred Karcher GmbH & Co. KG, Winnenden, in cooperation with the U.S. National Park Service.
Cleaning was performed with additive-free water heated to near the boiling point. Five diesel-powered Karcher pressure washers sprayed the water--about 7000 L (1850 gal) a day--on the granite surfaces to remove lichen, algae, ...
