When the de Young Museum opened its new building in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, it was time to party. Starting at 10 o'clock on Saturday 15 October, the celebrations ran non-stop for thirty-one hours, for free. Everyone was welcome. The city's opera singers, musicians, installation artists, poets and actors entertained guests. There were midnight tours of the collection, dancing and a dawn Maya blessing ceremony.
