The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regularly collects information on whether nursing homes meet dozens of fire safety standards --not just whether there are smoke detectors or sprinklers but whether the interior finishes are flame resistant and whether the corridor walls can keep smoke from spreading.
A pledge by CMS to post some of this information on Nursing Home Compare by the summer of 2005 has gone unfilled, however, and CMS now says it will not post any information about fire safety deficiencies until 2007, except for sprinkler status, which the agency plans to post by the fall of 2006, according to an email to OAR from spokesman Peter Ashkenaz. ...
